Mikel was born and raised in Whitefish, Montana. In 1983 he began his professional career with a large law firm in Phoenix, Arizona, where he became a full partner. He returned to Montana in 1993. In 1995, after a couple years with an established Kalispell firm, he co-founded a law firm in Kalispell. He remained a partner in this firm until his retirement from the firm in 2022.
